Be prepared for the weather with rain gear. Waterproof outerwear and moisture-wicking layers will make the walk more comfortable. Start with a breathable first layer, like a short-sleeved tee made with stretchy, durable bamboo. Bamboo material feels super soft on your child’s skin. It also helps to wick sweat away.

If it’s cooler outside, you can layer your little one’s shirt with comfy bamboo baby hoodies or cozy toddler hoodies. Bamboo baby bottoms and toddler pants are breathable and comfortable in wet or humid conditions. Bring your child’s rain gear, including a water-resistant rain jacket and pants.

Waterproof boots and socks will help keep their feet dry and warm. Bring an extra outfit for a dry journey home. Bamboo bodysuits and jogger pants will make kiddos feel cozy.

    Bring Umbrellas or Rain Hats

Now that your little one is dressed for their nature walk, some accessories will help keep them dry. An umbrella is usually necessary, but small children may also benefit from wearing a rain hat. Rain hats keep moisture off your baby or toddler’s face, whether in a stroller or walking with mom or dad.

    Find a Backup Rain Shelter

There’s always a chance for a downpour, so try and find shelter before you begin your nature walk. Check the park or trail for covered picnic areas or sheltered spots under trees. If the rain starts to come down, you can observe nature under a canopy or on a bench.

    Enjoy the Sounds of Nature

Encourage your child to enjoy the rhythms of nature, like the sound of falling drops or leaves rustling in the wind. Get quiet and observe birds singing at the tail end of a storm or the cool breeze as it moves through the branches. Guess how many different sounds you can hear on your nature walk. Write them down and compare them the next time you visit your local park or spend time in your backyard.

    Search for Raindrops

Rain is beautiful, especially when it glitters or dances on top of a puddle during a sun shower. Show your kids how it rests on leaves or flower petals. You may even observe it rushing down a stream or journeying through a rain gutter.

Snap Photos with a Waterproof Camera

If you have a waterproof camera, a rain shower is an excellent time to snap photos of the natural landscape. Your child can pick out their favorite sights, like a bird drying its wings or raindrops dancing on top of a lake or pond. While you admire the natural beauty, you can also stop for a few family pictures! Take selfies together in your rain jackets, or let your kids pose for a picture under a canopy of trees.

    Collect Nature’s Treasures

Make the best of a rainy walk with an explorer’s treasure hunt! As you head to your home or car, you can make it a game to gather natural treasures. Collect leaves and rocks that catch the eye. Ask your kids to find sticks or seashells. Count your finds at the end of your journey, leaving your treasures behind for the animals and landscape.

    Use Your Imagination

Pretend you’re a pack of forest animals on a rainy day! Or be a group of explorers discovering the perfect spot to build a new castle. Use your imagination to make the best of your rainy journey. Magical rain can create a new world in front of you or transform you and your kids into mythical creatures.

    Jump or Splash Around

Everyone likes jumping in puddles, so you could let your children splash if it’s safe. Rain boots and water-resistant pants let little ones play longer. Pack an extra towel and outfit to wipe away mud and keep your child cozy and warm on a ride home.

Do a Rainy Day Scavenger Hunt

If you plan on playing in the rain, a kid’s scavenger hunt can make your outing more fun. Keep it simple with memorable items. Search for native plants and animals, such as towering trees or woodland squirrels. Ask your child to find acorns or locate natural water sources. When your scavenger hunt is finished, you can celebrate with a warm treat or cozy reward.

End the Day with Comfy PJs and a Cozy Treat

A warm drink or nourishing snack is satisfying, especially after a rainy nature walk. Help your kiddos change into cozy baby pajamas or a pair of soft toddler PJs, then reward their adventurous spirit with a parent-approved treat of their choice. You can’t go wrong with a bowl of oatmeal or a mug of hot chocolate!

Some kids like to end their day with soup or broth. Roasted butternut squash cubes or chickpeas can help curb cravings after an adventure. Prepare for a restful evening with a cup of herbal tea, or re-energize with avocado toast on homemade bread.

Have Fun on Your Rainy Nature Walk

Parents can teach their children to enjoy every moment, including a wet and rainy adventure. Rain gear and breathable clothing will set the tone for your day, helping you and your child avoid discomfort and make the fun last longer. A few activities will keep everyone entertained.

If it’s dry enough, you can snap a few photos! Rainy days offer plenty of special moments, including imaginative exploration and play with your child. Relax and enjoy the beauty of nature!
