Pregnancy doesn’t start the day both couples have sex— it can take up to six days after intercourse for the sperm and egg to merged together and form a fertilized egg. Then, it can take 6 -10 days for the fertilized egg to completely implant itself in the lining of the uterus. Pregnancy start during implantation of the hormones needed to support pregnancy is released.

    Fertility

Most of the time (84% out of 100%) we get pregnant within a year. If you and your partner have sex regularly and avoid using any form of contraception. But as you age you may become less fertile.

In one study they find out that women having sex from:

    • aged 19 to 26 – 92% will become pregnant after a year and 98% after 2 years.
    • Also, aged 35 to 39 – 82% will get pregnant after 1 year and 90% after 2years.

They were unable to get clear evidence of age affecting men’s fertility

    What does ‘regular sex’ mean?

Having regular sex means having sex every two to three days throughout the month.

Some men try to time having sex during their wife’s ovulation period (when she releases an egg). It is not recommended and is not proven to be effective – National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) advises that this can be stressful.

    Fertility problems

Fertility problems affect 1 couple in the UK out of 7.

Lots of factors can cause fertility problems, including:

    • hormonal (endocrine) disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and problems with the thyroid or pituitary glands
    • physical disorders, such as obesity, anorexia nervosa or too much exercise
    • The reproductive system, such as infections, blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis or a low sperm count

Some of these factors affect any of the couples (women or men). In around 40% of infertile couples, there’s a problem with either of the two genders (male or female)

The most common issue with fertility problems is ovulation failure (which is caused by lots of different things) and sperm disorders.

In 25% of couples, fertility problems can’t be explained.

    Getting help

If you have been trying to conceive for several months to two years without success, see your gynecologist of midwives for advice.

    Our advice

The only way to be sure of a pregnancy is to take a pregnancy test. You can purchase home pregnancy tests online even if you are not pregnant yet, you should have it at hand and test yourself from time to time. Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called the human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (HCG). HCG is the hormone that supports pregnancy and starts being released when the fertilized egg implants itself and pregnancy begins.
